What Is a Privacy Score? How whatsmy.fyi Grades Your Connection

A privacy score rates how exposed your internet connection is. Learn how whatsmy.fyi calculates your privacy grade and what you can do to improve it.

A privacy score is a grade that summarises how well your current connection and browser configuration protect your identity online. whatsmy.fyi calculates your privacy score automatically based on three checks: HTTPS encryption, TLS version, and WebRTC leak status. See yours at whatsmy.fyi.

How whatsmy.fyi Calculates Your Privacy Score

The score uses three signals:

  • HTTPS (always checked): All connections to whatsmy.fyi are encrypted with HTTPS β€” so this check always passes. HTTPS is the baseline for any modern secure connection.
  • TLS 1.3: TLS 1.3 provides faster, stronger encryption than TLS 1.2. If your connection uses TLS 1.3, this check passes.
  • No WebRTC leak: If your browser does not expose your real IP address through the WebRTC protocol, this check passes.

Privacy Grade Table

GradeLabelCondition
A+ExcellentNo WebRTC leak + TLS 1.3
AGoodNo WebRTC leak + TLS 1.2 (or older)
CPoorWebRTC leak detected + TLS 1.3
DAt RiskWebRTC leak detected + TLS 1.2 or older

What Does Grade A+ Mean?

An A+ grade means your connection is:

  • Encrypted with HTTPS
  • Using the latest TLS 1.3 standard
  • Not leaking your real IP address through WebRTC

Most modern browsers on modern connections achieve A+ automatically. If you are not on A+, the checks below show exactly what to fix.

How to Improve Your Privacy Score

Fix a WebRTC Leak (D β†’ A or C β†’ A+)

A WebRTC leak is the most impactful issue. If you are using a VPN, check whether your VPN client has a "WebRTC leak protection" setting and enable it. Alternatively, use a browser extension that blocks WebRTC. In Firefox, you can disable WebRTC in about:config by setting media.peerconnection.enabled to false. See our full guide on fixing WebRTC leaks.

Upgrade to TLS 1.3 (A β†’ A+)

You cannot force a server to upgrade its TLS support. However, you can ensure your browser is up to date β€” all modern browser versions support TLS 1.3 and will automatically use it when the server supports it. If you are on TLS 1.2, the server you are connecting to may not support TLS 1.3.

What the Privacy Score Does Not Measure

The privacy score is a snapshot of a few key technical signals. It does not measure:

  • Browser fingerprinting susceptibility
  • Cookie tracking
  • Third-party tracker presence
  • DNS leak status
  • Whether you are using a VPN

For a comprehensive privacy audit, use dedicated tools like the EFF's Cover Your Tracks or Privacy Badger, in addition to whatsmy.fyi's focused checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a perfect score even without a VPN?

Yes. An A+ grade does not require a VPN. It only requires no WebRTC leak and TLS 1.3 β€” both of which apply to ordinary direct connections. Most users browsing without a VPN on a modern browser score A+.

Why is my score A+ but I am not using a VPN?

A+ means your connection is technically secure for the signals we test β€” not that you are anonymous. Without a VPN, your IP address and ISP are still visible to every site you visit. The score reflects encryption and leak protection, not full anonymity.
