What is a WebRTC Leak?

WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is a browser feature that enables video calls, voice chat, and peer-to-peer file sharing — without plugins.

To establish a direct connection between peers, WebRTC must discover the real IP addresses of both parties using STUN (Session Traversal Utilities for NAT) servers. This process can expose your real IP even if you're behind a VPN.

VPN services route your traffic through their servers, masking your IP. But WebRTC bypasses the VPN tunnel and communicates directly — revealing your ISP-assigned IP to any website that asks.

🔒

Use a WebRTC-aware VPN

Quality VPNs like Mullvad and ProtonVPN block WebRTC leaks at the network level.

🦁

Switch to Brave

Brave blocks WebRTC from exposing your real IP by default, with no configuration needed.

⚙️

Disable WebRTC

In Firefox: set media.peerconnection.enabled to false in about:config.
